Experience

Dr. David Susman has worked at Eastern State Hospital, a public psychiatric hospital in Lexington, Kentucky for more than 24 years. Together with his team, he provides care for more than 50,000 adults with severe mental illness and substance abuse problems. He is the founding director of the Hospital Rehabilitation Shopping Center, an award-winning rehabilitation and rehabilitation program.

Currently, Dr. Susman is an assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Kentucky. He serves as the director of the Jesse G. Harris, Jr. Psychological Services Center, which trains doctoral students in clinical psychology on how to provide psychological testing and treatment. He is also the training director of the University of Kentucky Internship Alliance, a pre-doctoral health service psychology internship program.

Dr. Susman has been actively involved in state and national mental health advocacy programs and psychological leadership. He has served as the president of the Kentucky Psychological Association (KPA) and is a member of the American Psychological Association (APA) and the National League of Mental Illness (NAMI). He currently serves on the APA governance of his board of directors.

Dr. Susman is active on social media and has written a mental health and advocacy blog on davidsusman.com, which has been recognized in several top mental health blog lists. He also included dozens of “Stories of Hope” and interviewed people who shared the challenges and successes of their personal mental health journey. He is a regular contributor to PsychologyToday.com and is cited by many media. He founded the popular “International Mental Health Advocates” Facebook group.

Dr. Susman has been married to his wife Kathy for thirty years. They have a daughter, Alison, who lives in Lexington, Kentucky.

Dr. Susman received a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Virginia, and a master’s degree and doctorate in clinical psychology from Marshall University. Doctor of Clinical Psychology, University of Kentucky.
