How to cite YouTube videos in APA format

The APA format is the official writing style format used by the American Psychological Association. Researchers use this style when publishing articles in professional journals. Students also use this style when writing essays for psychology and many other social science courses, including education and sociology.

One challenge students may face is figuring out how to cite different types of sources. For example, citations to book references look a bit different from citations to online resources. Video content is becoming an increasingly important source of information, so how do you cite content like YouTube videos or other online videos in APA format?

APA format for YouTube videos

The APA format of online video is similar to other types of digital media and online content.

The format you use should look like this:

Basic video quote:

Author, FN [Screen name]. (year month day). Video title [Video file]. Site name. http://www.webaddress/include/full/url/

Certain types of electron sources need to be enclosed in parentheses.According to APA’s official style guide, parentheses should enclose the necessary content, and there is no space between the text and the parentheses [like this].

Since many online video creators use pseudonyms online, you should include the author’s screen name in the relevant brackets.

common problem

As you can see only by looking at the basic format, sometimes you may have questions about how to include the required information.

What if the author’s screen name is misspelled? Online users usually have various types of screen names, some comply with grammar and spelling rules, and some do not. When citing videos on YouTube or other websites, be sure to enter the creator’s screen name accurately, including spelling and capitalization.

What if the full name of the author is not listed? In this case, just include the uploader’s screen name, but don’t put it in parentheses.

Videos of unlisted authors:

Rules of Psychology 22. (2018, June 7). Psychology is life [Video file]. Site name.

Why is it important to include the screen name? On YouTube and many other video sites, users must post their content under the screen name. Sometimes, users may create screen names that are exactly the same as their real names, but in most cases, users will create some type of name to represent their published content or some other personal characteristics.

In order for others to find a particular video, they may be able to search for the video title and find what they want, but in many cases, people also need the screen name or username to find the correct channel or video.

Should the video content be used as a reference? Whether to allow video as a source depends on the guide provided by your instructor. If you are not sure, please ask. Many reasons Why You may want to quote YouTube videos in your writing. The video may contain information that is not available elsewhere, may feature interviews with experts on a subject, or may provide unique examples that you want to cite in your paper.

How about including the interviewee’s name in the reference? If the interviewee’s name is not mentioned in the video title, please do not include it in the reference material. One way to obtain information is to quote the name of the interview subject in the cited text. “For example, Philip Zimbardo pointed out… (Psychological Interview, 2013).”

Quote video podcast

Video podcasting is another video format that you may want to reference at some point. Such podcasts usually feature interviews with experts on various topics, which can be an important source of unique information about your paper.

If you want to cite a video podcast, whether it is hosted on YouTube or published on the author’s own website, please use the following format:

Video podcast example

James, S. (host). (2019, March 1). Check the bystander effect (No. 2) [Video podcast]. exist Psychology this week. website.

As you can see in the example above, you should first list the authors and then identify them as the host of the program in parentheses. Next, include the date. After that, list the title of the episode, the episode number in parentheses, and the media type in parentheses. Then it should be the name of the video podcast, the name and URL of the website from which it was retrieved.

Also note that in the example above, the title of the video podcast is italicized. The official APA publication manual stipulates that when a written, video, or audio post is part of an overall work (such as a blog or podcast series), the title of the entire work should be in italics. This is the same format you use when citing individual chapters that are part of a book.
