It can also be a useful ingredient for damaged or textured hair.

Learn more about dimethicone, its benefits and safety, and product recommendations.

What is dimethicone?

Amodimethicone is a silicone-based polymer that can be used as a hair conditioner.

“This silicone derivative is lighter than other silicones (such as simethicone), so it won’t weigh down the hair,” said Anna H. Chacon, MD, a dermatologist certified by the board of directors.

According to Vanessa Thomas, a cosmetic chemist and founder of Freelance Formulations, silicones such as dimethicone are often used in skin care and hair care products that are specifically developed for anti-frizz and moisturizing.

Although dimethicone can be used for any hair type, it is generally suitable for curly, textured and wavy hair.

The Environmental Working Group (EWG) lists several hair care products containing amino dimethicone, including:

  • air conditioner
  • shampoo
  • Dyeing and bleaching
  • Hair care and serum
  • barber
  • Hair spray
  • Modeling mouse and gel
  • Hair relaxer

Although not as common as hair care products, EWG also lists skin care products containing dimethicone, such as:

  • mask
  • Primer
  • Exfoliating/scrub
  • detergent
  • Eye cream
  • Toner
  • Bronze
  • Concealer
  • serum

If you are looking for hair care products that contain dimethicone, Thomas says to look for the following ingredients on the product label:

  • Amino Dimethicone
  • trideceth-12
  • Cetrimonium Chloride

What are the benefits of dimethicone?

Some silicones, such as simethicone, have a bad idea because they cause product buildup when reused. Thomas explained that amodimethicone is different from dimethicone because the protein of this ingredient is positively charged.

“Positively charged ions actually repel each other,” Thomas said. “Therefore, these organosilicon proteins cannot be superimposed on each other and continue to accumulate.”

This helps prevent excessive buildup and makes the hair feel lighter.

In addition to preventing excessive accumulation, Thomas and Chacon explained that dimethicone has other benefits, such as:

  • It won’t weigh down the hair
  • Increase the softness and smoothness of hair
  • Improve texture and gloss
  • Reduce frizz
  • Increase color preservation
  • Selectively combine with more severely damaged hair
  • Reduce friction between hair shafts and prevent direct damage to hair

Are there any disadvantages to this ingredient?

According to Chacon, unless you are looking for products that do not contain silicon, there are no obvious disadvantages to using products containing dimethicone.

However, if you don’t like the feel of a leave-in conditioner, it may not be your best choice.

Because dimethicone has a temporary effect on the hair, it should be used frequently to get the most benefits.

According to a 2015 review, if you use a product containing dimethicone every day, you may need to use a deep cleansing or clarifying shampoo to remove any buildup.

is it safe?

The safety of dimethicone depends on how it is used. When used topically as a hair care or skin care product, dimethicone is considered safe.

An earlier safety report found that amino simethicone and several other simethicone-based chemicals are safe when used in cosmetic formulations.

Due to its large molecular weight, the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) determined that dimethicone is unlikely to be absorbed by the skin to an amount that makes it unsafe.
